Annalouise Paul Dance Theatre
Exploring cross cultural collaboration with XR dance, motion capture and 3D scanning technology
Set within UNESCO-listed heritage houses, shopfronts and the natural beauty of Penang’s tropical gardens, A Late Bloomer is Australian choreographer Annalouise Paul Dance Theatre's new VR Dance work exploring identity, trade and heritage.
As a part of our Cahaya XR initiative, Maitree collaborated with Annalouise Paul and dance artists Luvenia Kalia (Penang), Chan Kar Kah (Kuala Lumpur), Ruby Jayaseelan (Singapore) to explore the first iteration of A Late Bloomer.
Special thanks to Annalouise for the collaboration and to the Australian High Commission for their support: https://malaysia.celebrateaustralianow.com/event/a-late-bloomer-annalouise-paul-dance-theatre/

Outcomes
- 3D scanning of Penang heritage sites including the restored Cheong Fatt Tze (Blue Mansion) and Penang Peranakan Museum. The digital twins of chosen spaces were then integrated into a virtual world for audiences to explore.
- Beautiful motion capture work with dance artists using our Rokoko Suit, who each brought to life their digital avatars in the virtual world.
- 360 filming with dancers on site which ultimately merge into the virtual world.

A work anchored in cultural memory
This new work is anchored in cultural memory and how we carry stories in our bodies and into the future. Exploring ideas about trade, heritage and identity, what is lost and what is worth saving?
