Using 3D scanning, virtual tour technology and documentary film to create site interpretation for the Syed Al Attas Mansion in UNESCO listed Georgetown, Malaysia

Urban placemaking institute in Malaysia, Think City, engaged Maitree to produce a 3D Virtual Tour of a recent historical building restoration they had completed in the heart of UNESCO World Heritage Listed Georgetown in Penang.

Maitree captured the beautifully restored building with the Matterport Pro 3D camera technology to produce a 3D virtual tour for people unable to visit the building in Penang. We also produced a short documentary on the story of the building dating back to the 1860s when it was built by a wealthy Achehnese pepper trader Syed Muhammad Al-Attas.

Outcomes

A successful and high quality digital twin of a heritage mansion in Penang. The twin will be used as part of a growing digital archive of heritage sites in Georgetown.
Narrative documentation of the history of the heritage site to be disseminated to the broader public, many of whom are unsure of this central site’s story.
The use of stunning archival animations to bring old Georgetown to life.
