Speech Pathology Australia

Collaborating with people with disability to create authentic learning resources for speech pathologists and families

Maitree worked with Speech Pathology Australia to make a series of videos about communication support for people with disability and what it looks like when it is done well.  The video resources will sit on Speech Pathology Australia’s new Communication Hub website.

The video resources cover key topics around the importance of communication:

  •  Describing communication and the diverse ways people communicate
  • Explaining why communication is important to everyone
  • Identifying communication as a basic human right
  • Describing the diversity of communication disability
  • Differentiating communication differences from disability
  • Describing the impact of communication support needs

Outcomes
  • Four documentary shorts and a suite of six topic based videos with the perspectives of people with disability.
  • An important part of the project was to get the real voices, stories and perspectives of people with disabilities in order for them to share what’s important to them when receiving communication support.

Maitree visited four selected participants at their home and filmed with them in one of their chosen locations to get to know more about a day in their life whether it was running a business, enjoying a hobby or group activities or just spending time with family. We wished to make sure the content we were getting was as authentic as possible and truly reflected their communication experiences in daily life.
